KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Mother charged with child abuse after baby suffers burns in bathtub
A mother has been charged with child abuse after authorities said her 9-month-old son’s lower body was burned and she didn’t seek medical help for him.
The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said 26-year-old Ernestine Swinton faces charges of felony child abuse, felony child endangerment and second-degree domestic assault.
According to court records, Swinton told police that the boy was burned in the bath on Dec. 24, 2014. It was about a minute before he began to scream and his skin began to fall off. She feared losing custody of the child, so she treated the injury at home for days with petroleum jelly, she told police.
A medical examination at Children’s Mercy Hospital revealed a burn covering 20 percent of the boy’s body. Medical staff also expressed concern for failure to seek medical care.
The boy will require long-term physical therapy to fully extend his legs and learn to walk, according to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Prosecutors requested a $50,000 cash bond for Swinton.
