Couple smears diaper in toddler’s face, beats him to death in potty training accident
LAYTON, Utah — A Utah toddler died from injuries that police say were caused by his mother’s boyfriend during a potty training incident.
Police were notified of the abuse when James Sieger, Jr., 2, was unresponsive and covered in bruises when he arrived at Davis County hospital on Saturday.
The boy, who suffered severe internal injuries, was flown to Primary Children’s Hospital in critical condition. After several surgeries, the boy died on Monday morning, according to KSTU.
According to court documents, the boy was abused by his mother, Jasmine Bridgeman, 23, and her boyfriend, Joshua Schoenenberger, 34. Documents state the abuse happened at Shoenenberger’s home.
“Certainly the Injuries looked like the result of abuse and the biological mother and her boyfriend were the ones who brought the child in and their stories were not matching up or making sense with what we were seeing,” said Layton police Lt. Travis Lyman.
Some of the abuse was a result of attempts to potty train the toddler, according to court documents. Lt. Lyman said the latest incident happened on Friday during a potty-training incident.
According to jail documents, the boy defecated in his diaper and the couple became furious, even taking the diaper off and smearing it in his face, according to KUTV.
Documents state Schoenenberger continued to beat the boy while Bridgeman went outside and smoked a cigarette.
“The biological mother did allow significant amount of abuse to go on without intervening, but also engaged in it herself,” said Lyman.
Police say the couple brought the boy to the Davis County hospital and reported he had almost drowned in the bathtub. The boy had internal bleeding, bruising to his legs, groin, arms and head.
“There are no words. There are no words what this baby went through and the pain he suffered,” said his Aunt Nicole Sieger.
His grandmother says she saw the boy at the store with his mom last month with a big bruise on his face.
“He had a bruise on his cheek a pretty big one,” said Krista Sieger.
Krista says she called Layton police to report it and the father says he called the Department of Child and Family Services, but nothing ever came of it.
“We could have stopped this whole thing,” said Krista.
“Very upset we have been trying for a long time to get those kids out of that situation,” said James.
Lyman says according to their records they did get a call from the grandmother on April 16, but he says they tried to get back to her and make contact but were unable to do so. He says the issue was brought up to the Department of Child and Family Services but the mother’s whereabouts could not be found. No one knew where she was.
A spokesperson for the DCFS told KUTV that they are not able to talk about individual cases because of confidentiality reasons.
James Sieger says he was living with Bridgeman in Georgia four months ago and she suddenly just vanished with 2-year-old boy and their 5-month-old child. He did not know where she was at until his mother spotted them in the store in Utah.
Schoenenberger and Bridgeman are both at the Davis County Jail and are expected to be charged with homicide.

I feel better now My Friends. The Indifference and Apathy toward Our Children’s health, education, and welfare seems to be the general attitude of a large percentage of the world’s men and women.
So many times I feel like “what good are we doing, I mean, Hellloooo, is anybody out there????”
I have to admit, even though I couldn’t help but get discouraged, it has never long before something or someone will draw my mind away from the evil Our Children are forced to endure, and right there before my eyes The Perfect Blessing has been dropped off. The funny thing is, someone might say “The Perfect Blessing, was it a million dollars?”, but right at that moment a million dollars wouldn’t have lifted the burden and carried it for me for at least a while….
What I could do to that man with my four footed cane! But then again someone like that has no brains or heart to beat out of them!
Wyatt, don’t you dare go to trying to kick a mudhole in his rear-end with your Tony Lamas.
This is what has had me so discouraged and sad, but Wyatt, I would have shouldered the burden if I had been permitted to just happen to knock on that screen door and see this less-than-a-magot touch that Child.
Our Cilddren are being forces to endure so much that is wrong, and few really care.
I read the story with my mouth open, not believing what I was reading,
I mean the boy uses a diaper as a diaper’s supposed to be used, and they get mad to the point they smear it in his face and beat him to death?
Can I have just ten minutes in a locked room with ’em both, PLEASE?
Or, “Mom” and boyfriend get sent to prison and locked up in general population with the rest of the inmates advised on why they’re there. I guarantee they won’t live long!!!
Doug S, thank you for stopping by, and especially for careing about Our Children.
Doug S, you are what is needed in this world, someone that cares.
There were 686,000 reports of Child Maltreatment last year, and less than 1/4 of all cases are reported, so that means that there were at least 2,744,000 cases of Child Maltreatement.
So do you see what I am getting at Doug S???? We surely don’t want you in jail, paying for your crime of paying these people back that would touch a Child in the first place.
Doug, you are a careing human being that just might help some Child avoid this evil thing, or you could help many.

I have been a single father now for 9 years, just me and my boys – I have been raising them on my own since they were 1 and 3 years old. I was in total shock when I read this story!!!
I pray for the father and grandmother, me and my 2 boys thoughts are with you in your time of suffering and I know that words fail at this time – I know if that was my son I would be in a world of suffering!
It sometimes is difficult to say people deserve capitol punishment, but without hesitation these 2 have earned a ride on the electric chair!
Scott, Thank You for your input; you will never know how much your story means to me.
So many years ago, I woke up one morning, or so it seems now, and found myself with 4 sons, and no where to turn.
Just so you know, last year my youngest decided it was time to be a full time civilian after 3 or 4 tours in the U.S. Army. I have 4 men now that are my sons, but I will always see my 4 boys when I look at them.
But I do have something else now…. a bunch of Grandsons and 1 Granddaughter.
Scott, make every good memory you can, because NO ONE can take them away from you.
GOD Bless You and them Boys.
