Mesa, AZ – A teacher and football coach at a Mesa charter school was arrested by police Sunday on suspicion of sexual conduct with a minor after a 17-year-old girl revealed she was having a sexual relationship with him, police said.
The teenager contacted a counselor at a summer camp she was attending, telling the counselor about the relationship. The counselor then notified police, according to Detective Steve Berry, a Mesa police spokesman.
In interviews with police, the victim said she had sex with Sheron Butler, 36, a teacher at her school, several times, and that the situation began in early 2015, Berry wrote in a statement.
Butler was identified by police as a teacher and football coach at Sequoia Charter School.
Police launched their investigation on Saturday, when they were called by the counselor. Butler answered a few basic questions when police went to his home in East Mesa, but quickly asked to consult with an attorney.
Butler was arrested by detectives on suspicion of four counts of sexual conduct with a minor.
Police ask that anyone with additional information regarding the case call them at (480) 644-2211.
