Troutman, NC  –  A woman is facing a child abuse charge after her 1-year-old swallowed pills she got from her mother’s purse.

Abisahi Porsche Cox, 20, of Lark Glen Drive, Mooresville, was charged with felony child abuse and given a $2,500 bond, said Troutman Police Department Chief Matthew Selves.

Selves said TPD officers answered a call on Winterflake Drive on the morning of Sept. 5.  The call concerned an overdose involving a 1-year-old girl, he said.

He said the investigation revealed the child accessed one hydrocodone and seven Klonopin pills from Cox’s purse.

Both the child and her mother were transported via Iredell EMS to Iredell Memorial Hospital.  The child was admitted to the hospital overnight for observation.

Selves said Iredell County Department of Social Services responded and took emergency custody of the child.

The TPD’s criminal investigation division presented evidence gathered in the investigation to the District Attorney’s Office, which authorized the child abuse by neglect charge.  Cox was also charged with simple possession of Schedule II and simple possession of Schedule IV for obtaining the narcotics illegally, Selves said.
