TRAVERSE CITY, MI – A woman who police say was intoxicated when she dropped a 3-month-old infant in October at the Bay Hill Apartments complex now faces criminal charges.
Shyann Skye Topous, 23, is charged with second-degree child abuse and possession of a controlled substance (Alprazolam, also known as Xanax).
Police responded to the Bay Hill Apartments Oct. 12, after Topous called 911 to report the infant boy was suffering from a medical issue. Arriving officers found Topous was intoxicated and say they learned she had dropped the baby at some point earlier in the evening. He later began bleeding from the mouth and became unresponsive.
The boy was listed in critical condition at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital for several days before he began to improve.
“He has actually made a remarkable recovery,” said Traverse City Police Sgt. Jim Bussell.
Bussell said the boy is not showing an signs of lingering effects from the fall, but the extent of any damage won’t be fully known until the child is older.
